The Pitfalls of Tight-Fitting Saddles
Frequently, we encounter saddles that have been fitted just a tad too narrow. While it might seem like a solution, offering ample wither clearance and room for saddle pads, it can have detrimental consequences. The tightness of the saddle can lead to atrophy of the trapezius muscle, causing it to lose its strength and mass. As a result, the saddle starts to sink due to the weakened muscle, making it appear too wide for the horse. In response, riders may opt for a narrower gullet, which further exacerbates muscle atrophy, setting off a downward spiral of physical decline.
Not Always a Shark’s Fin Wither:
In some cases, a horse may appear to have a shark’s fin wither, which is often perceived as a conformational issue. However, in reality, this horse doesn’t have a shark’s fin wither; instead, it has very prominent vertebrae due to the loss of muscle surrounding those vertebrae. It’s essential to consider the long-term impact of saddle fit on a horse’s musculature and overall well-being.
